Why UKAS Accreditation Matters
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the UK's sole national accreditation body, appointed by government. For asbestos surveying, UKAS accredits inspection bodies against ISO/IEC 17020 — assessing surveyor qualifications, sampling procedures, quality management, and the accuracy of written reports.
HSE guidance HSG264 (“Asbestos: The Survey Guide”) strongly recommends using an accredited inspection body for management, refurbishment, and demolition surveys. For asbestos analysis — air monitoring and 4-stage clearance after removal work — accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 is a legal requirement under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
Using a non-accredited surveyor risks an inadequate survey, reports rejected by insurers, contractors, or building control, and — if asbestos is missed — serious health and legal consequences for the duty holder.

A UKAS-accredited asbestos surveyor is an inspection body that has been independently assessed by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service against ISO/IEC 17020 — the international standard for the competence and impartiality of inspection bodies.
